Getting Back to Nature

چکیده
EVALUATIVE PROPERTIES ARE often thought to be problematic. E.g., they are said to be “unverifiable,” to “play no role in observation,” to be “queer,” to suffer from a “location problem,” and indeed “not [to be] in this world at all.”1 These charges differ in detail, and there are a variety of ways of responding to them.2 However, one general way of vindicating evaluative properties is to show that they are either natural properties or suitably explainable in terms of other natural properties. In this paper, I argue that such a naturalistic vindication of evaluative properties can go farther than many have thought. In section 1, I lay the groundwork for my discussion by distinguishing between thick and thin evaluative properties and by clarifying the concept of natural properties. In sections 2, 3, and 4, I defend the claim that thick evaluative properties are natural properties, while I leave a discussion of thin evaluative properties for another time.

Does going to an amusement park alleviate low back pain? A preliminary study
BACKGROUND Low back pain is often called nonspecific pain. In this type of low back pain, various emotions and stress are known to strongly affect pain perception. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the degree of low back pain changes in people with chronic mild low back pain when they are inside and outside of an amusement park where people are supposed to have physical and psycho...
متن کاملWatering CanMEDS flowers
We expand on the discourse related to nature surrounding Canadian medical training and the CanMEDS flower. We advance the notion that a major contributor to burnout is the increasing complexity and segregation of not only the medical profession, but society as a whole, leading to choice overload and an overemphasis on complex, data driven, rational decision making. We then propose that the key ...
متن کاملA Wandering Mind Does Not Stray Far from Home: The Value of Metacognition in Distant Search
When faced with a problem, how do individuals search for potential solutions? In this article, we explore the cognitive processes that lead to local search (i.e., identifying options closest to existing solutions) and distant search (i.e., identifying options of a qualitatively different nature than existing solutions). We suggest that mind wandering is likely to lead to local search because it...
متن کاملThe Impact of Packaged Food on Children\'s Health: Strategies to Overcome
Background: Packaged foods are often high in sugar, salt, fat, additives, preservatives, artificial colours and flavours and low in nutrients. These factors may lead to weight gain, delayed growth and development, type 2 diabetes, damage to the teeth, food poisoning, and many other health problems. This short commentary has critically examined the effects of packaged food on children's health a...
متن کاملA New Back-Propagation Neural Network Optimized with Cuckoo Search Algorithm
Back-propagation Neural Network (BPNN) algorithm is one of the most widely used and a popular technique to optimize the feed forward neural network training. Traditional BP algorithm has some drawbacks, such as getting stuck easily in local minima and slow speed of convergence. Nature inspired meta-heuristic algorithms provide derivative-free solution to optimize complex problems. This paper pr...
متن کامل"Getting confirmation": gender in expectations and experiences of healthcare for neck or back patients.
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore, from a gender perspective, patients' expectations prior to seeking healthcare for neck or back pain, and their subsequent experiences of the care and rehabilitation they received. METHODS Thematized interviews with 12 patients, 7 women and 5 men, using open-ended questions, were analysed according to grounded theory. Each patient was interviewed...
